Curious Cat's Eyes - Reflecting Common Catio Questions on our FAQ Page
  • What is a Catio?
A catio is an outdoor enclosure designed to provide cats with a safe and secure space to enjoy the outdoors. These enclosures, also known as cat patios, allow cats to experience fresh air, sunshine, and the sights and sounds of nature without the risks associated with roaming freely.
  • Why should I get a Catio?
A catio provides safety, outdoor enjoyment, and mental stimulation for your cat. It keeps them secure from traffic and predators while offering exercise and sunlight. Catios also protect wildlife, give you peace of mind, and can increase your cat's lifespan. They're customizable to suit your space and your cat's needs.

  • How long does it take to build a Catio?

  • How do I care for my Catio?
Catio care is a breeze! Here's the scoop: Treat cedar wood every 2 years, vacuum or sweep the carpet, and keep food out to avoid unwelcome guests. We're here to help with any maintenance needs.
  • Are Catios durable?
Absolutely! Catios are built to withstand the test of time. We use durable materials like cedar wood, known for its natural resistance to weather, insects, and rot. Every component, from the mesh to the hardware, is carefully selected to ensure the catio's durability. So, you can rest assured that your furry friends will enjoy a sunny and secure haven in their catio for many happy years.
  • Are Catios Safe?
Catios are like Fort Knox for your feline friends. We use top-notch buried mesh to outsmart any wannabe escape artists. Our construction is so solid, it's like a cat-proof fortress. Rest assured, your kitties will be safe and sound in their own little kingdom.
  • What about my HOA?
You would need to discuss with your own HOA. Though we have had no issues yet, every HOA is different.
  • Can I have a Catio if I rent?
In a renters situation you most likely will need a freestanding catio and a window that would work for a cat door. We recommend keeping these minimal as you would need to remove it upon moving.
  • Can I have my cat's litterbox in the Catio?
Yes you can! We recommend building a box to cover up the litter box to give your cat privacy and provide a clean look to the area. This also helps minimalize any smell and keeps bugs away.
  • What areas do you serve?
We currently provide service to all of the greater Portland metro area. Will travel for the correct jobs. We can also provide info for catio builders in other parts of the country if needed.
  • I have a senior cat, would they enjoy a Catio?
Cats of any age can enjoy the benefits of a catio. We can add items to fit the personality or life stage of your cat. If you have a senior cat that has trouble with jumping we will add steps or ramps to help them explore their new space.
  • How long will it take for my cat to get used to a catio?
Every cat has a unique personality and will have their own response to the cat door and the outside life the catio provides. We have seen cats take to the door almost instantly. We have also seen cats take weeks to freely roam in and out. We recommend spending time with your cat in the catio if possible. Using toys and treats (make sure to clean treats and not leave food in your catio) will help your cat get used to the sanctuary. Patience is key here.
  • Can Cats live outside in a Catio all year round?
Cats should not live in a catio year-round without proper shelter and temperature control. In cold weather, provide insulated shelters and heated pads. In hot weather, ensure shade, cooling pads, and fresh water. The catio should also offer protection from rain, snow, and wind. Regular supervision is essential to ensure safety and comfort during extreme conditions.
  • How do I know if my cat will like a Catio?
To determine if your cat will like a catio, observe their behavior: Curiosity: If your cat shows interest in the outdoors, watches birds, or sits by windows often, they may enjoy a catio. Energy Levels: Cats with high energy and those who love to explore new spaces are likely to enjoy a catio. Nature Interaction: Cats that chase insects or play with leaves may find a catio stimulating. Sunbathing: Cats that enjoy basking in the sun or lounging in warm spots will likely appreciate a catio. Supervised Outdoor Time: If your cat enjoys supervised outdoor time but needs safety, a catio could be a great fit. Introducing your cat gradually to the catio can also help gauge their interest and comfort.
